Beginning with a pickup from your accommodation, we’ll drive to Marangu Park Gate for formalities before heading to the Rongai trailhead. Our journey unfolds through diverse landscapes, from maize fields to pine forests, gradually ascending to Simba Camp and beyond. Each day offers new vistas and challenges, with overnight stays at scenic campsites like Second Cave and Mawenzi Tarn Camp. As we approach the summit, the excitement builds, culminating in a pre-dawn ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating our achievement, we descend to Marangu Gate, where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Day to Day Tour Plan

Day 1: Rongai Gate (1950m) – Simba Camp (2600m). Trekking Time: 3 – 4 Hours.

8 Days Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route

We’ll pick you up from your hotel and embark on a scenic drive to Marangu Park Gate, where we’ll complete formalities before heading to the Rongai trailhead. After meeting our guide and porters, we’ll commence our hike from Nale Moru village. The path meanders through maize fields, enters a pine forest, and gently ascends through beautiful scenery. Our first night’s camp is at Simba Camp, situated at approximately 2,600 meters, offering basic amenities and stunning views.

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Trekking Time: 2 – 3 hours

Second Cave Camp

After a leisurely breakfast, we continue our trek from Simba Camp to Second Cave (3450m) at a relaxed pace to aid acclimatization. We’ll enjoy a hot lunch at Second Cave and spend the afternoon relaxing amidst the Moorland habitat before dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Second Tarn Cave (2600m) to Kikelewa Cave (3600m) Trekking Time: 3 – 4 hours.

Following breakfast, we ascend towards Kibo, reaching Kikelewa Cave at approximately 3600 meters. Enjoy the expansive views and immerse yourself in the wilderness atmosphere. Overnight at 3rd Cave camp (Kikelewa Caves).

Day 4: Kikelewa Cave (3600m) to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4330m) Trekking time: 3 – 4 hours.

A short but steep climb leads us to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and an opportunity to acclimatize further. Spend the afternoon exploring the area and preparing for the next day’s ascent.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4330m) – Kibo Hut (4700m)

We continue ascending on the east side of Kibo, crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut. Rest and prepare for the final ascent, which begins at midnight. Overnight at Kibo Camp.

Day 6: Summit Attempt, Kibo Hut (4700m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Horombo Hut (3720m).

Rise before midnight for the challenging summit attempt. After tea and biscuits, we start the ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The steep climb to Gillman’s Point (5681m) is followed by a trek through stone scree to Uhuru Peak. Enjoy breathtaking views before descending to Kibo Hut and continuing to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.

Day 7: Horombo Hut (3720m) – Marangu Gate (1980m). Trekking Time: 6 hours.

Descend to Marangu Gate, passing Mandara Hut along the way. Sign the register and receive your summit certificates before driving back to Arusha or Moshi, concluding the trek with cherished memories.

What to carry on Mt. Kenya Trekking:

  • Waterproof rucksack with day pack
  • Sleeping bag (covering at least 3 seasons)
  • Roll mats and insulation pads
  • Comfortable hiking boots, light walking trainers’ thongs (flip – flops)
  • Gaiters (useful when encountering snow), Wooden walking stick / ski pole, Sunglasses or snow – goggles, sun hat, balaclava or woolen hat, Warm scarf, gloves, mittens and thermal underwear
  • Sweaters / jumpers, anorak / raincoat, water and windproof pants, jackets, t-shirt, several pairs of socks
  • Long sleeved shirt with collar, small towel, toiletries and toilet paper
  • Sunscreen and lip salve
  • Flash light (head mounted preferable) and spare batteries
  • Water bottle
  • Camera with spare film and batteries
